Rear Lawned Garden of a Stone House in South Wales

This lawned rear-garden provides the main route for accessing the house. The owners wanted to keep some lawn for the children to enjoy but felt the area lacked colour and interest, particularly in the winter as they pass through it every day. The newly-built garden room extension also needed a more appealing outlook.

A curved path was introduced to unify the irregular shape of the rear garden and improve access to the parking area. Planting in the circular border creates a partial screen of tall grasses and flowering perennials. Miscanthus sinensis 'Red Chief' and the seedheads of purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) are left uncut to provide winter interest. Geum 'Totally Tangerine', English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia 'Hidcote') and Rudbeckia hirta 'Indian Summer' provide vibrant colour from spring through to autumn.

Miscanthus sinensis and coneflowers (Echinacea purpurea) maintain interest right through the winter months.

Corten steel edging was used to stop grass encroaching into the border. This makes mowing and maintenance easier as well as looking great.
