Private but Exposed Rear Garden in South Wales
This client originally contacted us to design a shady border along a hedge, but after some discussion the scope soon expanded. Situated on the edge of town, this private rear garden was very exposed to prevailing winds. As a result, the elderly couple who lived here seldom sat outside to enjoy the garden - the existing patio was very small and windswept. Also, although they like gardening, they were getting to an age where bending down to maintain borders was becoming more of a chore than a pleasure.
So we proposed a raised bed for easier access and a high trellis behind which, when climbers have established, will form a 'double wall' with the hedge behind to reduce the effect of the wind. A tree surgeon was called in to reduce the crown on the crab apple which has allowed far more light to flood in.
The patio was designed with concentric rings radiating out from the conservatory and drainage was installed to divert storm water away from the house.
Planting was selected to ensure interest all through the year as the border was visible from the kitchen as well as the conservatory.
Soft lighting was installed to illuminate the patio surface and pick out climbers on the trellis.
